Lamination, Tinting & Waxing + FAQ
What to expect before, during & after the appointment, and frequently asked questions.
Before your appointment and how to prepare
A few days ahead of the appointment, I will send you a consent form and waiver to fill out through Fresha. This form is extremely necessary that it be filled out before your appointment. It’s to inform you with all the risks involved with the service and it allows you to make a sound decision to undergo it. If it’s not filled out before your appointment, I will have you fill it out in the studio prior to us starting. Things will be much smoother if you fill it out prior to arriving and I will greatly appreciate you doing so!
To prepare for your appointment, minimize sun exposure to prevent complications during the procedure. Refrain from waxing or tweezing your eyebrows for 3+ weeks prior to allow me to assess your natural brow shape accurately. Discontinue the use of retinoids and exfoliating skincare products 3-4 weeks before to be suitable for waxing, if you can’t continue use, tweezing will be done as hair removal instead. Arrive with clean skin on the day of your appointment, any makeup you have on your brow area will be removed prior to us starting but I recommend coming makeup free if possible (more for your own comfort afterwards considering you’ll be walking around with a half face of makeup on!), and be prepared to follow aftercare instructions diligently.
What to expect during your appointment
Consultation
The appointment starts off with an in-depth consultation, I’ll be asking you what you’re looking to achieve within the appointment and we’ll talk about what’s possible. Once we’re ready to proceed forward, the appointment then moves right into the lamination as our step one. I’ll access your brow hairs to determine your processing times anywhere from 8-15 mins. The lamination itself is sectioned into 3 steps.
Lamination: Perming
Step one is the perming solution. This step is a bit smelly due to the ammonium thioglycolate in the solution so please be warned and keep your eyes closed at this stage as there are some fumes and can cause your eyes to burn a bit if you open them. I have a timer for each of your brows so no brow gets processed more than the other. Once the solution is on I will put some cling film over each brow with the solution underneath and perform little checkpoints throughout your timer with a tiny brush to see how your brows are lifting. Once the brows have just lifted and are brushed into their new position the solution is removed and your total processing time is recorded for the next step.
Lamination: Neutralizing
Step two is neutralizing, and locking that new lift you have in place! The neutralizing solution stays on for the same duration as the perming solution from step one and the same check points apply to ensure the brows are completely saturated in this solution. Once the brows are finished neutralizing the solution is removed and instead of heading into step 3 of the lamination we’re actually going to come back to that at the end and I’ll explain why later!
Mapping
The next part of the appointment is mapping. This part is crucial in any brow service to ensure the most symmetrical and natural results with any tinting or hair removal.
During this portion I will be looking at your brows and will be accessing the most natural way to shape them to achieve your desired look. I consider the shape of your face and bone structure to customize your brows to create the most flattering shape for you. Your eyebrows should complement other features on your face too. A makeup pencil and mapping string is used to draw an outline before any tinting or waxing/tweezing occurs. You will be able to see the shape and edit or change anything you like before committing to it!
Tinting
Once a shape has been decided on, the next step if you’re choosing to opt for it is tinting. The tints I use do develop a slight skin stain for up to a week, and they last on the hairs for up to a month, my goal with tinting is always to produce the most natural looking result for you, the tint is only applied inside the agreed upon shape.
Hair Removal
Then after tinting it’s time for waxing or tweezing! Waxing or tweezing will be decided on what your skincare looks like (if you use actives in your daily skincare you won’t be a waxing candidate to prevent your skin from injury) The hair removal is anything outside of the agreed upon shape. I use soft wax suitable for sensitive skin and then follow up with a wax oil to remove any residue left behind on your skin.
Concealing
This step is optional but it makes your brows look amazing! It adds a slight highlight on your brow bone to accent your fresh brows!
The Reveal
Fresh brows is the best feeling! You may be wondering.. Where is step 3 of the brow lamination? Let me explain! I always want to show you how the brows look before we add step 3 which is a nourishing solution.
Lamination: Nourishing
The nourishing solution is always added at the very end of the service and after the reveal because it’s a very thick solution meant to hydrate your brows after the chemical process we just did for them. It being a hydrating solution it reflects a lot of light and can also make your brows appear darker than they are, which is why I apply it on at the very end!
Aftercare Instructions
Aftercare is very important and must be followed to keep your brows healthy and hydrated! I spend time to go over these instructions with you so you know what to expect when you go home and how to make your results last. I always send a copy of the instructions to your email so you have them on you when you need them!
What to expect after you leave the studio
Your brows have just been laminated, they’re lifted and they look amazing! Now, it’s up to you to keep them looking amazing.
Lamination is a chemical process so your brows will be a bit dryer than they would be normally. Hydration and nourishing is KEY to maintaining healthy brows after a lamination treatment to keep them looking their best.
Please follow your aftercare instructions diligently to maximize your results and to keep your brows healthy!
Frequently Asked Questions
-
Brow lamination is a treatment that restructures and sets eyebrow hairs in a uniform shape for a fuller, more defined look. Think of it as a perm for your brows.
-
Lamination typically lasts about 6–8 weeks, depending on your hair type, growth and aftercare routine. As you start to get brow lamination done more frequently, the lifted effect will start to last 9-10 weeks instead of 6-8 as your hairs will get used to being in a lifted position. In between lamination to keep your brows looking fresh you can get maintenance appointments or refreshes to clean up your brows using hair removal and some tint to bring them back to life without needing to re-laminate!
Ideally you should not get a lamination service done inside of 8 weeks from your last one to keep your brows healthy.
-
I don’t offer lamination just on its own, it’s paired with shaping as well in the form of waxing or tweezing depending on your skincare and skin sensitivities. Tinting is also an option too!
A simple lamination + shaping appointment is about an hour and a half, adding tint to the mix would make it closer to 2 hours.
-
Anyone with, thin, unruly or uneven brows looking for a fuller, more lifted look. It works best on medium to full natural brow hair. If you have sparser hair growth you may not benefit much from this service. But please feel free to send me a photo of your brows if you’re unsure if it would be suitable for you!
-
Unfortunately, not everyone is a suitable candidate for lamination. Individuals who are pregnant or nursing, have skin conditions such as eczema or psoriasis in the brow area. Individuals who have Alopecia on their brows, have large, troublesome patches without hair growth. Individuals that don’t want their brows to look fuller, those who have damaged and dry brow hairs.
-
Nope! You may feel some skin tingles from the chemicals on your skin but it should not cause you discomfort unless you are having an allergic reaction which you may have if you have sensitive skin and choose to forgo a patch test!
-
Tint is completely optional! The tint is only meant to last for a few days up to a week on the skin and stains the brow hairs for up to a month. The added tint onto the skin, however, helps to give some extra definition and shape to the brows for the meantime while it lasts! It depends on your skin type and daily skincare routine how long it will last.
-
If you space out your lamination appointments properly and don’t get them done too frequently (no sooner than 8 weeks from your last one and maybe even longer your brows hairs will be fine. Depending on where you’re at in your brow journey with me I may suggest giving your brows a break for a few months if I’m noticing anything to concern about. I will always prioritize the health of your brows over money in my pocket. I will always keep your best interest at heart when I make professional suggestions to you.
Any reputable brow artist WILL tell you when to dial it back if it means maintaining the health of your brows. If you need your brows looking perfect, consider just scheduling wax and tint appointments for a few months, focus on hydration and nourishing your brows and then reintroduce lamination when your brows are nice and healthy again!
-
After the 24 hour period following your appointment, you can for sure wear brow makeup to style and further define your brows.
For me personally, I love a bold. filled in brow when I wear makeup, but I absolutely love the lifted effect lamination gives me when I’m not wearing any makeup. It’s the best of both worlds!
-
Lamination works wonders on top of a brow tattoo, lamination can refresh your tattoo and make your brows look like you just got them touched up! No tint even necessary! I do suggest waiting at LEAST 3 months after getting permanent makeup before getting lamination done just ensure your skin is fully healed before introducing those chemicals to your skin.
